Group Work

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

I have to admit, when I first saw that we were going to be using things like Wiki and Blogs and other forms of technology, I got a little intimidated by the whole situation.  These were things that I was very unfamiliar withand did not feel comfortable trying to grasp.  I must say that I totally misjudged the whole situation, because Wiki is a great way of collaborating with my fellow students, and it is extremely simple to use.  Wiki (Wiki Scratch!!!, sorry I had to do that!) has made this course a lot easier, much because it gives us feedback much quicker than e-mail.  It is nice to get on there and see what everybody else has posted and add our thoughts to the same page so that everyone can build on each others thoughts in a fast manner.  Overall, Wiki made it very easy to collaborate.

Group work is very important in a writing class because it gets everybody’s thoughts moving.  It gets a person away from having a “one track mind” and allows for us to share ideas about a certain topic so that we can see things in many ways instead of just one.  It is also very important because it allows for others to find mistakes in our work and opens up room for suggestion and improvement.

I believe that the main objective of assigning group work is just that, to help us improve by getting other peoples opinions.  It is very easy to overlook our own mistakes, but when somebody else tells us our mistakes they are much easier to correct.  Also generating new ideas is very important in group work.

The rewards of group work far outweigh those of the challenges.  The reward in the end is being an overall better writer.  The challenges are that sometimes we struggle or reach to find different ideas and that can sometimes be harmful instead of helpful.

Using Criteria

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

The first case that comes to mind when I think about using criteria, is that of a career.  About two years ago I was faced with the decision to stay at a job that I was making decent money or to change to a lesser paying job that worked around my school schedule.  I went through a lot of criteria to make my decision.  I started off by weighing the positives and negatives in both situations.  The reason that it was such a tough decision is because I knew that I would be getting married soon an I would not be finished with school when I was at that point in my life.  I looked at the benefits that both situations presented me.  The current job definetely payed more and it helped me save money at the present time.  On the other hand it was sort of a “dead end job” that I could not advance in.  The other job did not pay as much, but it allowed me to be in a better position in the long run.  College was definitely (and still is) the only way to get somewhere in this world anymore.  When looking at the difference that a college education has on a person financially, it was much better to choose that route than the current one, so I ended up going to the lesser paying job just to get an education.  Whether that was a good decision or not, is yet to be seen, but I felt like an education was the better route.  The only thing that scares me is the cost of college.  It is unfortunate that college is so expensive, yet we are almost forced to go into the institutions to get jobs.  I still think that I judged the criteria correctly though.

English 112 learning

In this course I expect not only to become a better writer, but also learn new technologies that I am unfamiliar with as ways of showcasing my writing.  I must say that this first week of class has already taught me many new ways to do this.I also intend on broadening my vocabulary.  By the time this class is complete I expect to be an all around better writer.  By this I mean, I hope to be able to be thorough in my thoughts and present them in a manner that is appealing to all readers.  I would like to work on organization of my work and preparation of my papers.  The only thing that I expect from my instructor is patieence!  I am not the best person in the world when it comes to computers.  I often times have difficulties with them and computers and I don’t always get along.  The instructor seems pretty cool, though so I think this will be a smooth course.  I can’t wait to start (and finish…lol) this class!!
